Understanding Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles are cosmetic concerns that many men and women would rather not understand, but simply make disappear. Not all wrinkles are the same, and knowing why you develop certain types of wrinkles helps you understand how Botox® may help prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

Some wrinkles, such as those around the nose and mouth, develop in response to your body producing less collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, three key substances for young skin. Unfortunately, there is little that we can do to prevent this, as it is a natural part of the aging process. The wrinkles that are treated with Botox® are “dynamic wrinkles,” meaning that they form due to continuous contractions of your facial muscles.

I believe that being proactive is key to maintaining a youthful appearance and starting Botox® treatments before you have fine lines and wrinkles may reduce the likelihood of developing these issues at a later age. I call this PreJuvenation. Botox® works by relaxing the muscles of the forehead and around the eyes. I recommend early treatments so that you use the muscles less often, and your skin is not subjected to the constant pinching that leads to wrinkles.

Will I Still Need Botox® Treatments When I Get Older?

Genetics and skin type influence how and where you develop wrinkles, so you may need to continue using Botox® as your skin changes with age. The reason that I recommend preventive treatments is that you may develop fewer or less severe lines and wrinkles and fair better in the aging process than others in your age group.
