What Causes a Double Chin?

The area just under your chin to the top of your throat is known as the “submental compartment,” and it is prone to developing fullness, primarily from excess fat. Many people believe that submental fullness, known more commonly as a “double chin,” is a sign of being overweight. I explain to my patients that double chins develop for many reasons, such as genetics, and that even toned individuals are at risk for the condition. Aging is another factor that contributes to having a double chin.

Can I Eliminate a Double Chin with Exercise and Diet?

If you are overweight, your double chin may get smaller as you get closer to your ideal weight, but this is not guaranteed. Exercises that help improve your posture may help strengthen the neck muscles and reduce your submental fullness. You can also try simple exercises that target the neck muscles, such as tilting your head back and looking toward the ceiling, extending the neck forward and placing a ball under your chin.

Do I Need Surgery for My Double Chin?

Not everyone needs surgery for a double chin. The factors that are considered before recommending surgery are:

• Skin laxity
• Fat distribution
• Problems in other areas of the neck, such as banding

Having an invasive surgery for a double chin is excessive in many cases, and the best option is typically Kybella® injections.
