YouTube gives us so many amazing makeup tutorials, but how can we separate the good skincare advice from the bad? You can’t even trust that YouTubers look how they look due to skin-perfecting filters that can be placed right in front of their camera lens. It’s enough to drive us batty. But just because you see flawless skin on the internet, it doesn’t mean that your concerns aren’t valid. And though we can’t give you unattainable, almost alien-esque skin, we can certainly help you with those features that make you self conscious. Take enlarged pores. What causes them and what can you do to shrink them? Keep reading learn all about enlarged pores.
Each tiny dot you seen on your face is a pore. Pores are small openings for hair follicles that also contain a sebaceous gland that creates sebum. We need sebum to keep our skin hydrated. Where sebaceous glands are bigger (and thus where we’re more oil-prone) it makes sense that pores would also be more visible.
Pore size is determined by genetics, so you can thank mom or dad for passing along their pores. People with more fair skin are more likely to have smaller pores than, say, those with olive or darker skin (who will likely have slightly larger pores). But, before you blame mom or dad for your skin troubles, understand that you can still affect your skin.
It might not just be genetics causing your large pores. If you’re not the best at washing your face, you probably have excess sebum clogging those pores–and making them look more noticeable. Harsh pore-strips that claim to remove blackheads (often on the nose) can actually enlarge them by causing unnecessary trauma to your pores.
Your skin type can also lead to larger pores. If your skin is on the drier side, your pores will likely be less noticeable. Do you have oilier skin? Then you probably have more visible pores. Don’t worry if you have oilier skin, though. Oilier skin can sometimes help you age more gracefully!
Wash with warm water (never hot) to help loosen gunk from your pores and use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t make your skin feel tight afterwards. Look into charcoal or clay masks to help gently remove makeup and dead skin cells from your pores.
Did you know that chemical peels are also a good option to help clear clogged pores and help you manage acne? We have many types and strengths to fit your skin’s needs.
