Have you ever found your skin suddenly angry and red? Sometimes, it takes a little bit of backtracking to figure out why it’s acting out. Sometimes the culprit is a new cleanser that seemed fine until a few hours later. Other times, it could be active ingredients, like an at-home chemical exfoliating treatment with higher levels of AHA than you’re used to. Whether it’s a new ingredient wreaking havoc on your skin, or an overdose of actives, our skin will usually tell us something is amiss. Keep reading for steps to take when your skin is in pain or inflamed.
The first step is to take a step back. This is where learning about your skin and how it functions will help you. Get online and see if you can find answers to your questions (using reliable and legitimate sources). Damaging your skin barrier is unfortunately not as uncommon as we would like, something we owe to an influx of new products and skincare bloggers who are often pushing the new can’t-live-without product. How can you resist the promise of flawless skin? So many of us are using more products than we need, more often than we need to, and the exposure to more ingredients can take its toll. Searching online might help you identify a sensitizing ingredient that affects you and others. Learning about your skin will also help you develop the vocabulary to discuss your skin better, and will give you the tools to ask the right questions when you come see us.
The second step is to document. If your skin isn’t happy, take a few pictures in good lighting. The reason being is, your skin may have calmed down by the time you come see us. Having photos of when your skin was really acting out can help us see what was going on, and how it has changed by the time you see us. That information can help us pinpoint what happened and give you options to treat and prevent it from happening again.
If your skin is suddenly behaving differently, call us today at (949) 721-6000 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Bonakdar.
