Dr. Bonakdar Explains: Vertical lip lines, infamously known as “smoker lines” or “kissy lines”, tend to form due to our natural aging process. Repetitive facial expressions over the years may cause the fine lines above the lip to slowly etch and become deep fissures. Lip lines can be corrected through the use of hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm Volbella, to mask the their appearance.

Such was the case for this patient whose lip aging included smokers’ lines outside of the lips and lip deflation. With one syringe of Juvederm Ultra Plus, these signs have been reversed, leaving the patient’s lips rejuvenated and natural looking and lip lines corrected.

Dr. Bonakdar Explains: Juvederm Volbella is a great filler option for correction of lip lines in thin skin individuals. Because this is a thin filler, it often takes more than one syringe for complete correction of the lip lines. This patient opted for a staged correction in two treatment sessions. She is shown here after her first syringe of Volbella. You can see improvement in the lines, but they are certainly not completely gone. It is important to educate my patients with the number of treatment sessions and the number of syringes necessary for optimal results.

I like to use Juvederm Volbella for lip line corrections. Unlike other Hyaluronic acid fillers which have the capacity to swell beyond their volume, this one does not swell after injection. This patient has thin skin and has suffered with lip lines for many years. She was extremely happy with her immediate results.
